ASML, a Dutch company, said today that it would open a new support center in South Korea, hoping to establish more cooperation with customers in one of its most important markets.

The company will invest 240 billion Korean won (181 million US dollars). The ASML factory is about 40 kilometers south of Seoul, with a total area of about 16000 square meters, including a maintenance center, training and research and development center, education and experience center, which is planned to be completed in 2024. As for the semiconductor equipment factory in Huacheng Industrial Park, Peter Wenlink believes that it will play a very important role in the cooperation with local customers. The training center in the factory will make the most advanced technology closer to customers.
ASML is the world's largest photolithography equipment manufacturer, and photolithography equipment is an important part of the chip manufacturing process. It has surpassed Japanese manufacturers such as Canon and Nikon in this field, and is now the only company in the world to produce extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machines for producing advanced semiconductors.
This site will serve as a support center for Korean customers, such as Samsung and SK Hynix, to repair and improve machines using remanufacturing methods. ASML CEO Peter Wenlink will attend the groundbreaking ceremony.
As the United States imposes restrictions on the export of semiconductor technology, ASML and other chip equipment suppliers aim to mitigate the impact of such restrictions on sales by strengthening their contacts with customers in South Korea and other markets. Korea is the second largest market of ASML, accounting for more than 30% of sales. Taiwan, China, China, is the location of TSMC, the global chip production leader - accounting for more than 40%.
The company plans to increase the proportion of Korean enterprises outsourcing repair parts locally from the current 10% to 50%. ASML has given up the option of establishing its own manufacturing plant in South Korea. ASML CEO said that there is always an opportunity to expand from remanufacturing to manufacturing, and the company's business in South Korea is "in its infancy".
With regard to the next generation technology of the EUV system, namely HIGH NA EUV, Wenlink said that he expected that the new HighNA EUV equipment would be shipped in 2024 and would be used in the wafer factory for the first time, with a single unit cost of 300 million to 350 million euros; It is estimated that mass production will take place from 2026 to 2027, and the long-term plan is to produce 20 sets annually.

The actual leader of Samsung, Li Zairong, is expected to meet with ASML CEO Bennink in the near future. As early as June this year, Korean media reported that Li Zairong, the head of Samsung Electronics, had a meeting with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte. The two discussed how to strengthen cooperation in the semiconductor industry and solve global supply chain problems. Li Zairong especially talked about ASML lithography machines and asked Prime Minister Lu Te to help Samsung coordinate the supply of EUV lithography machines. Li Zairong will then visit the ASML headquarters to further discuss relevant issues. Samsung has previously said that it will strive for the EUV lithography machine it ordered to arrive as soon as possible to help it gain an advantage in the advanced manufacturing process competition.

Some leading chip manufacturing equipment manufacturers, such as Applied Materials and Lam Research in the United States and Tokyo Electronics in Japan, are setting up research bases in South Korea to cooperate with Samsung, SK Hynix and other companies to develop advanced semiconductor technology. Lam Research has opened a new technology center in South Korea, "Lam Research Technology Center". The center is located in Longren Industrial Park, 50 kilometers southeast of Seoul, covering an area of 30000 square meters. It is reported that the company has spent about 100 million dollars for the center. The research and development center is very close to the Samsung factory, and is located in the center of the Korean government led "K-semiconductor belt" industrial park. Therefore, it is expected to further strengthen cooperation with Korean semiconductor enterprises.
