The DRAM and NAND storage industry is once again facing a decline in consumer demand as storage contract prices have fallen by more than 10% in just one month, with DRAM prices dropping significantly by nearly 20%.

The DRAM market has experienced roller-coaster-like fluctuations in the past few quarters. Especially in the post-pandemic era, against the backdrop of weakened interest in consumer electronics and overall market dynamics, demand has fallen to an all-time low. To deal with this situation, manufacturers have been clearing inventory by reducing prices to correct inventory. Now, after months of price increases, they are already in a bullish position.

However, new reports indicate that the market has cooled down and DRAM and NAND prices have fallen by double-digit percentages. Analysis firm DRAMeXchange pointed out that the price of DDR4 8Gb 1Gx8 modules fell by 17.07% to $1.7 in September. DRAM prices have been steadily rising since last October, but they fell for the first time in August this year, with a decline of 2.38%. During the same period, the price of 128Gb 16Gx8 MLC also dropped by 11.44%. Interest in the consumer PC market has declined. This is mainly due to consumers transitioning to the next-generation standard, which has led to a slowdown in the market pace in the shortest time.

TrendForce pointed out that the inventory of PC manufacturers is still very high, which means that PC demand has not yet recovered. PC shipments in the third quarter increased by 4.4%, lower than expected. However, most of the inventory is DDR4 products rather than the newer DDR5.

Storage manufacturers are still in the inventory adjustment stage. The older DDR4 standard is difficult to sell in the market, while DDR5 modules are currently in high demand. Although DDR5 is becoming the mainstream in the industry, it still has a long way to go in replacing the dominant position of DDR4, especially for consumers who hope to obtain medium and low computing performance from the system.

In general, the storage market looks quite healthy in terms of quarterly growth. With the debut of AI PC products, it is expected that once the market's adoption of next-generation products increases, we will see growth in this field.
