Elektrobit 24 announced the first automotive-grade embedded real-time operating system (OS) and hypervisor for the new AURIX TC4x microcontrollers (MCUs) from Infineon Technologies AG. OS and the new version of EB tresos Embedded Hypervisor enable OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers to more easily develop and deploy automotive E/E architectures based on the AUTOSAR Classic standard, enabling accelerated development of next-generation vehicles.
The shift towards domain and area-based E/E architectures is driving automakers to consolidate ECUs, reduce the number of ECUs to save energy, and add more features and applications. Creating virtual machines with EB tresos Embedded Hypervisor on a single MCU enables a combination of applications to accelerate innovation and meet new consumer demands.

EB tresos AutoCore OS is an embedded multi-core real-time operating system that implements the AUTOSAR standard and all its extensible classes. EB tresos Embedded Hypervisor uses the new virtualization capabilities of Infineon AURIX TC4x MCUs to allow the parallel execution of multiple operating systems and AUTOSAR protocol stack instances on a single MCU, thus saving costs and reducing update efforts. It supports the separation of applications, such as OBD in-vehicle diagnostics, from other applications on the MCU to avoid duplicate certification costs and delays caused by application updates.
Given the increasing complexity of vehicles, we are focusing on collaboration with best-in-class software partners," said Thomas Schneid, senior director of software, partner and ecosystem management at Infineon. Its expertise in AUTOSAR and AURIX TriCore architecture software development, including its new version of EB tresos Embedded Hypervisor, provides our customers with a competitive advantage in developing the next generation of vehicle E/E architectures."
The new AURIX TC4x targets a wide range of automotive applications, including those with a strong need for functional integration in domain and area-based E/E architectures, supporting the development of e-mobility and autonomous vehicle driving through functional safety systems. The Infineon AURIX TC4x enhances in-vehicle connectivity, including for advanced functional safety and information security. prototypes of the AURIX TC4x family of 28nm MCUs are available now and are expected to be available in volume production in the second quarter of 2024.
Elektrobit is proud to be the first to offer an operating system and virtual machine monitor for the AURIX TC4x MCUs to help automakers and Tier 1 suppliers enjoy their product innovations," said Mike Robertson, vice president and head of global product and strategic management for Elektrobit. The combination of EB tresos and the new AURIX TC4x is an excellent choice for OEMs and suppliers looking to develop ECU software applications based on the Classic AUTOSAR standard."
