On the other hand, TSMC has set 3nm volume production for later in the fourth quarter, i.e. before the end of the year. This timing means that TSMC will abandon its capacity targets for this year and focus production and customer foundry products on 2023.

TSMC and Samsung's high-end process competition has continued to 3nm, but the gap between the two processes is very obvious. TSMC has delayed the mass production of 3nm, while a quarter has passed since Samsung successfully mass produced 3nm, and the industry has repeatedly rumored that TSMC's 3nm mass production has been delayed.
In each past generation of process development, TSMC has been in the absolute lead, not only bringing the world's most advanced technology, but also higher yields and production capacity than its competitors.
However, when it comes to the 3nm process, TSMC seems to have dropped the ball. Not only has there been no news of successful mass production, but there have been many rumours in the industry that TSMC has delayed mass production of 3nm.
Although we all know that TSMC will not miss out on 3nm, as the rumours grow, it is inevitable that we will listen to the wind. In particular, the industry rumors that Intel and Apple, two major customers do not want TSMC 3nm initial N3 process, intends to use next year's N3E process directly, so led TSMC to give up this year's 3nm production.

The reason for the abandonment is mainly because TSMC's N3 process cost is too high, so high that customers can't afford it. But TSMC, Apple has not responded at an official level as to whether it will abandon the initial N3 process, so the rumours are always rumours.
Especially since TSMC has officially made a statement on 3nm, showing strong confidence. According to TSMC, saying, "The 3nm process development is in line with expectations, with high yields, and will be in volume production later in the fourth quarter."
TSMC's statement reveals a lot of information, on the one hand, the yield performance is outstanding and has reached a "high" level. Although there is no specific data, but compared to Samsung 3nm exposure of 10% to 20% yield level, TSMC certainly higher than this figure, and even do not rule out beyond two or three times the level of yield. The higher the yield rate, the more secure it is to produce chips for customers.
