Renesas Electronics, a global semiconductor solutions provider, today announced its entry into the automotive radar market with the launch of a new 4x4-channel, 76-81GHz radar transceiver, the RAA270205. Designed to meet the demanding requirements of ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) and L3 and higher level autonomous driving applications.         Leveraging the automotive expertise gained from years of working with customers around the world, Renesas has added this radar transceiver to its growing sensor fusion portfolio, which includes radar, vision systems and other sensing units.
The RAA270205, designed in collaboration with Renesas and recently acquired Steradian Semiconductors Private Limited, will be unveiled at electronica in M unich, Germany, from 15-18 November 2022. The new transceiver MMIC (monolithic millimetre wave integrated circuit) is suitable for imaging radar, long-range forward-looking radar and 4D radar, as well as for corner radar and central processing radar architectures, so-called "satellite" in-vehicle radar systems. MIMO (multiple input and multiple output) channels. It can also be cascaded for higher channel counts and better radar resolution.
The RAA270205 offers best-in-class accuracy and a bandwidth of up to 5 GHz. Its 112.5 MSPS ADC (analogue-to-digital converter) sampling rate is nearly three times faster than other products in its class. At the same time, the 1.2W power consumption is 50% lower than comparable transceivers. In addition, it has a noise figure of 9dB, 3dB lower than other radar transceivers, and a tuning frequency of up to 300MHz/?s improves radar resolution and object detection.
Today's radar transceiver MMICs must achieve higher resolution to support the high precision requirements of ADAS and autonomous driving safety platforms," said Vivek Bhan, senior vice president and vice president of the Automotive Solutions Business Unit at Renesas Electronics. Working closely with Steradian, which has deep radar design expertise, and focusing on features such as functional safety and low power consumption, Renesas is expanding its sensor fusion offerings to help our customers reduce development costs and time to market."

RAA270205 successful product portfolio

Renesas plans to combine the RAA270205 transceiver with other compatible devices in its portfolio to support automotive radar systems. These "successful portfolios" include the "Satellite Radar System for AD/ADAS", which will be available in the second quarter of 2023. Renesas' "Success Portfolio" is based on mutually compatible and seamlessly collaborative devices with a technically proven system architecture, resulting in a system-optimised, low-risk design for faster time-to-market. Renesas has now launched over 300 Success Portfolios based on a wide range of products in its product portfolio, accelerating customer design processes and bringing products to market faster
