For ruthless price increases such as Xiaomi/Qualcomm, some manufacturers have considered abandoning ARM chips: the opportunity for RSIC-V is here

This week, news came from the UK that ARM has approached Qualcomm, Xiaomi, MediaTek, Unigroup and other companies about changing the commercial license fee collection model, but the results were not satisfactory.

Previously, ARM charged licensing fees at an average chip price of about 1% to 2%, but the new model will be adjusted to charge the average price of end-point products (such as mobile phones and tablets), which will undoubtedly make ARM's revenue grow significantly. This practice was first disclosed in the court dispute between ARM and Qualcomm over Nuvia CPU licensing. Although ARM later clarified that Qualcomm's statement was inaccurate, it made a statement in July last year, saying it would increase chip revenue by expanding the value of the technology.
Interestingly, ARM rival Imagination also disrupted the situation, claiming that a common customer complained to him about ARM's aggressive new pricing strategy. Imagination responded that it will not change the existing business model, and it is important for chip designers and end point manufacturers to freely choose their intellectual property portfolio. Of course, Imagination's move does not rule out promoting its own RISC-V CPU and GPU products. However, many analysts have begun to worry that if ARM forcibly changes its business model and doubles the related spending of mobile phone manufacturers, it cannot be ruled out to accelerate their transition to self-development or into the arms of RISC-V.
Taking SiFive, the number one manufacturer of RISV-C CPU development, as an example, the latest 5nm product P670 can not only match the performance of Cortex-A77, but even surpass ARM in performance per unit area. At worst, ARM should not "steal chicken and not lose rice." At present, only Apple and Samsung are not involved in this price increase dispute because they are both chip designers and mobile phone manufacturers, and their licensing agreements are different.
