Global Wafer Corporation of Taiwan, China, the world's third largest supplier of silicon wafers, today announced its plans to build a new state-of-the-art 300 mm silicon wafer manufacturing facility in Sherman, Texas, with a capacity of 1.2 million wafers per month. This will be its first such activity in the United States in more than 20 years.
Global Wafer already has a 200 mm SOI fab in St. Peters, Missouri, which they plan to expand to a 300 mm SOI fab for RF applications. The new site, managed by GlobiTech, a subsidiary of Global Wafer, will be located in Sherman, Texas, and will be built in multiple phases. When completed, the 3.2 million square foot wafer fab will be the largest of its kind in the United States and one of the largest in the world. In addition to supporting up to 1,500 jobs, the fully equipped facility will be capable of producing 1.2 million wafers/month in volume. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, in addition to the factory site, additional "significant land" has been acquired to support any further growth required.
The new facility is important for national security and to strengthen the U.S. semiconductor supply chain. Until now, most wafers today have been imported from Asia. 1.2 million wafers per month of capacity will help the growing U.S. semiconductor industry and reduce U.S. foreign dependence. The region has seen significant investment in semiconductor fabs over the past few years, including TI's $30 billion plant construction plan and Samsung's $17 billion expansion, as well as Intel and TSMC's new plants in Arizona and other companies and states.
"With the global chip shortage and ongoing geopolitical concerns, Global Wafer is taking the opportunity to address the resiliency of the U.S. semiconductor supply chain by building an advanced node, state-of-the-art 300mm silicon plant. Instead of importing wafers from Asia, Global Wafer's U.S. facility will produce and supply wafers locally, significantly reducing its carbon footprint in the current global ESG wave, thereby benefiting both its customers and Global Wafer." said Doris Hsu, chairman and CEO of Global Wafer.
According to Texas Governor Greg Abbott, the total construction cost could be as much as $5 billion. Of that amount, $15 million was sponsored by the Texas Enterprise Fund (TEF). In addition, GlobiTech has received a $10,000 per veteran job creation bonus. Construction of the facility is expected to begin later this year. According to Global Wafer, mass production of the first phase of the fab is expected to take place as early as 2025.
