Google has made progress in developing its data centre chips, a development that means the company could start using the new chips in 2025, a key effort as it seeks to beat its rival Amazon Cloud Services (AWS).
Google's server chip design team is currently working on two ARM-based 5nm server chips, according to foreign media reports. Of these, Maple is built on an existing design from chipmaker Myman Technology, which has just been completed and handed over to TSMC for pilot production, while Cypress is an in-house design developed by a team based in Israel.
Media reports say that Google's custom server chips are expected to be mass-produced in the second half of 2024 and will be deployed in data centres as early as 2025.
News of Google's progress in developing data centre chips comes as the company is competing with Microsoft in the field of artificial intelligence (AI).
After spending billions of dollars on AI development and acquisitions, Google has been upstaged by US AI research firm OpenAI over the past quarter.
OpenAI's new AI chatbot tool, ChatGPT, has been a recent hit, gathering over 1 million users in less than a week since its launch. Two months after its launch, it has reached 100 million monthly active users, faster than TikTok or Instagram.
