On Feb. 13, Ford announced it will invest $3.5 billion in a battery plant in southwestern Michigan, as new U.S. federal tax credits make it more advantageous to build a plant in the United States than in Canada and Mexico. Ford noted that the new plant will be the first lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery plant in the U.S. to be invested in by an automaker, and Ford will be the first automaker to commit to producing nickel cobalt manganese (NCM) and LFP batteries in the U.S.

The new plant, called BlueOval Battery Park Michigan, is located in Mar shall, about 100 miles west of Detroit. Ford said the plant will begin operations in 2026, employ 2,500 workers and be able to produce 35 GWh of lithium iron phosphate batteries annually, enough to power about 400,000 electric vehicles. Ford said the lithium iron phosphate chemistry will help increase the output of electric vehicles and make them cheaper to manufacture.
At the same time, Ford also reached a new agreement with Ningde Times. Under the agreement, Ford's wholly owned subsidiary BlueOval Battery Park Michigan will use the LFP battery technology and services provided by Ningde Times to produce batteries, and Ford engineers will be responsible for the integration of the cells and the vehicle. In this regard, Ningde Times officials told the media, "Ningde Times has accepted Ford USA's invitation to cooperate and will provide preparatory and operational services for its battery plant in Michigan and license the patented battery technology."
As part of the Ford+ program, Ford is working to deliver 600,000 electric vehicles globally by the end of this year and 2 million electric vehicles globally by the end of 2026.
We are committed to leading the electric vehicle revolution in the U.S., which means investing in technology and jobs, which in turn keeps us at the forefront of global change in the auto industry," said Bill Ford, Ford's executive chairman. I am also proud that we have chosen our home state of Michigan as a key battery production center."
