Intel Corp. said Monday at Hot Chips 2023, a semiconductor technology conference held at Stanford University, that it will launch a new data center chip, "Sierra Forest," next year, which will be able to do 240 percent more computing per watt of power than current data center chips, the first time the company has disclosed such data. This is the first time the company has disclosed such data.
Data centers, which power the Internet and online services, consume huge amounts of power, and tech companies are under pressure to maintain or reduce energy use, prompting chip companies to focus on how to improve the computing efficiency of each chip. Ampere Computing, a startup founded by a former Intel executive, was the first to launch a chip focused on efficiently handling cloud computing jobs. Intel and rival AMD followed with similar announcements, with AMD's product hitting the market in June.

Intel has lost some of its share of the data center market to AMD and Ampere. The company said Monday that its chips, called "Sierra Forest," are on schedule and will be available next year. For the first time, the company is dividing its data center chips into two categories: Granite Rapids chips, which focus on performance but consume more power, and the more energy-efficient Sierra Forest chips.
Ronak Singhal, a senior researcher at Intel, said the company's customers can integrate older versions of its software onto a smaller number of computers in the data center.
