Hyundai Mobis has announced that it has partnered with Autotalks, an Israeli communications semiconductor designer, to develop a 5G-based vehicle-to-electronics (V2X) integrated controller, businesskorea reports.
Autotalks, which was recently announced to be acquired by Qualcomm, is described by Hyundai Mobis as a leader in V2X semiconductor design. Hyundai made a strategic investment in Autotalks back in 2018.
The 5G-based V2X integrated controller jointly developed by Hyundai Mobis and Autotalks is significantly different from current LTE or 4G solutions. The technology enables high-capacity, real-time data exchange between vehicles or between vehicles and infrastructure, and is classified as a core technology for "L4 autonomous driving".
In order to achieve full autonomy, the vehicle must independently assess and control driving conditions. Therefore, 5G-based V2X technology is essential to enable high-speed data exchange with the surrounding environment while on the move.
Hyundai Mobis reportedly plans to commercialize this technology within the next 1-2 years.
