Intel has announced Tunnel Falls, a new quantum chip containing 12 silicon spin quantum bits, the most advanced silicon spin quantum bit chip Intel has ever developed, using decades of Intel's transistor design and manufacturing capabilities.

The quantum chip was produced on a 300mm silicon wafer in Intel's fab, leveraging Intel's leading transistor industrial manufacturing capabilities, such as extreme ultraviolet lithography and gate and contact layer processing techniques. In a silicon spin quantum bit, the spin state (up/down) of a single electron corresponds to the information encoded (0/ 1). The silicon spin quantum bit is essentially a single-electron transistor, so Intel is able to manufacture it using a process similar to that of a standard CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) logic line.
Intel believes that the silicon spin quantum bit has an advantage over other quantum bit technologies because it can leverage similar production techniques as advanced transistors. The silicon spin quantum bit is similar in size to a transistor, about 50 x 50 nanometres, one millionth the size of other types of quantum bits, and promises to be mass-produced much sooner. A paper in the journal Nature Electronics suggests that silicon may be the medium with the best chance of enabling large-scale quantum computing.
Meanwhile, with an advanced CMOS production line, Intel can improve chip yields and performance through its innovative process control technology. Data shows that Tunnel Falls achieves a 95% yield, achieving voltage uniformity close to that of CMOS logic processes. In addition, Intel can achieve over 24,000 quantum dots per wafer. In addition, Tunnel Falls can form four to 12 quantum bits that can be isolated from each other or manipulated simultaneously.
Next, Intel will continue to improve the performance of Tunnel Falls and integrate it with the Intel Quantum Software Development Kit into Intel's quantum computing stack. In addition, based on the experience of building Tunnel Falls, Intel has already started developing the next generation of quantum chips, which are expected to be available in 2024.
