Broadcom has placed a 3nm chip order with TSMC, queuing up with Apple, Qualcomm, MediaTek, Nvidia and AMD for TSMC's N3 and N3E processes, according to industry sources.
According to Taiwanese media Electronic Times, sources said that despite market speculation that Broadcom may lose Apple's order for cellular modem chips by 2025, Broadcom has already signed a 3nm chip production order with TSMC in 2022. Sources pointed out that if Broadcom withdraws some of its 3nm chip orders with TSMC due to the loss of Apple's order, TSMC will still be able to grab Apple's internal replacement order for Broadcom chips. It is reported that TSMC held a 3nm mass production expansion ceremony on December 29, 2022 at Fab 18's new site in the Science Park (STSP) in southern Taiwan, China.

TSMC President Liu Deyin said at the ceremony that the current 3nm process yield is comparable to the same period of 5nm mass production, and has been mass produced to help customers develop new products. Compared with 5nm, the logic density of the 3nm process is increased by 60%, and the power consumption is reduced by 30-35% at the same speed, which is the most advanced technology in the world.
In terms of market demand, Liu Deyin said that TSMC's 3nm process market demand is very strong. From the first year of mass production of 3nm process technology, annual revenues will exceed 5nm over the same period. It is estimated that mass production of 3nm technology will unlock an end-point product value of $1.5 trillion worldwide within five years. In terms of yield, semiconductor industry analysts and experts estimate TSMC's 3nm yield is as low as 60% to 70%, or as high as 75% to 80%, while Samsung's 3nm yield is only 10-20%. In this regard, industry insiders revealed on social platforms that TSMC is ready to cut prices because the cost performance of the 3nm process is too low.
