Melexis, a global microelectronics engineering company, recently announced the launch of Melexis' ultra-low power Hall switches, MLX92216 and MLX92217, which offer the benefits of consuming only 1 microwatt of power and less error, helping to accurately predict power costs and extend battery runtime. The two magnetic devices can be used to detect the on/off position and can replace traditional reed switches as the preferred choice for Internet of Things (IoT), industrial and white goods applications.

IoT applications are facing a huge challenge as the demand for battery-powered smart devices is increasing day by day, and the need for extended battery runtime is becoming more and more pressing. As a result, meeting the industry's need for ultra-low power, highly reliable, high-precision components is critical to continuing to drive the ongoing development of embedded and connected devices.
Melexis' release of its micro-wattage switches, the MLX92216 and MLX92217, directly address this need. These two three-wire Hall switches offer industry-leading accuracy, stability and reliability throughout the life cycle of the application. They are available in unipolar, omnipolar and latch models for applications such as lid open/close detection, wearables, industrial machinery, home appliances, tablet enclosures, valves, energy and flow meters, as well as replacing traditional proximity and reed switches.
The MLX92216 and MLX92217 feature an advanced power supply design with integrated auto-sleep/wake-up logic and an average current consumption of only 0.9μA, eliminating the need for the user to perform any operation (depending on the model). In addition, the MLX92217 features an "enable" pin that allows the user to activate or deactivate the autosleep logic, reducing standby current consumption to 200nA while keeping the system ready to wake up. Both switches have a low min/max error fluctuation (<50%), which contributes to stable power budgets and maximizes lifetime. maximize service life and provide reliable performance throughout the product's lifecycle (i.e., peak current consumption of less than 1.5μA).
The MLX92216 and MLX92217 offer a variety of magnetic threshold ranges as well as options for multiple update rates or operating voltage ranges (1.6V to 5.5V). The two switching chips are available in two different small packages: the UTDFN-4L and TSOT-3L for ambient temperatures from -40°C to 85°C.
"Thanks to the MLX92216 and MLX92217, we have developed a 1-microWatt switch that is more reliable than existing market offerings," said Minko Daskalov, product line manager for latches and switches at Melexis, "and it is ideal for Industry 4.0 application switching solutions."
