The latest news points to Micron Technology Inc. building a $1 billion manufacturing plant in India, with the Indian government set to grant certain approvals that would incentivize its operations in the country.
The plant is understood to handle chip packaging - encapsulating bumpy silicon chips in fiberglass or ceramic substrates and routing them into pins or balls to be soldered onto printed circuit boards.
In addition to packaging, the facility will be involved in testing, sorting, marking and logistical packaging of finished chips (onto reels or pallets). The plant will also be able to directly produce Micron's various branded products, including NAND flash memory and various generations of DRAM.
Back in January, it was reported that U.S.-based memory chip maker Micron Technology Inc. was in high-level discussions with the state government to invest Rs. 750 billion (about $10 billion) in a memory chip manufacturing facility that would include assembly, testing, marking and packaging (ATMP) operations, when it was reported that Micron was looking for at least 300,000 square meters of land between Ahmedabad and Sanad. The matter of finding at least 300,000 square meters of land between Ahmedabad and Sanad is in the final stage.
The new India facility will reportedly join Micron's 11 manufacturing sites in countries and regions including Japan, Malaysia, Taiwan, Singapore and China, in addition to facilities in the United States.
