According to a new report, Apple's rumored 5G modem (baseband) project has multiple vendors interested in assisting with the final assembly of the chip.

While custom-designed modems may be made by Apple's chip-making partner TSMC, the final packaging stage may be handled by other suppliers. According to DigiTimes, Sun Moonlight Technology and Anke Technology are "competing" to package modem chips. Both companies already have experience packaging Qualcomm's modem chips, the report said.
Qualcomm is currently the exclusive supplier of 5G modems for Apple devices, including the entire iPhone 14 series, but there have long been rumors that Apple is designing its own 5G chips as an alternative. Last month, Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon said he expected Apple's 5G modems to be ready by 2024, but Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported that it could take Apple three years to fully break away from Qualcomm.
The first device to feature Apple's custom 5G modem is expected to be the fourth-generation iPhone SE, which could be released around March 2024. It's unclear how Apple's chip will perform compared to Qualcomm's modem, but switching to a homegrown chip could reduce Apple's production costs over time. Meanwhile, all iPhone 15 models are expected to feature Qualcomm's Snapdragon X70 modem, which has further cellular speed and power efficiency improvements compared to the Snapdragon X65 in all iPhone 14 models.
