TSMC's US plant construction and equipment installation schedule has been delayed, sources say

        With advanced semiconductors becoming a strategic material, TSMC, which holds the absolute lead in sub-7nm processes, has become the target of most attention worldwide. In the face of geopolitical risk pressure, TSMC has announced the establishment of plants in Japan and the United States and is also evaluating the possibility of building a plant in Europe.
 
 
        Compared to the smooth performance of Japan's expansion, the new plant in the US has recently experienced delays in progress, and there have been murmurs of constant upward revisions to the degree of profitability impairment. The first phase of the 5nm project, originally planned for 2024, has been further upgraded to 4nm, and the second phase of the project is under planning and construction has begun.
Digitimes quoted sources as saying that, judging from the current engineering and equipment installation progress, TSMC's new US fab is unlikely to be in full production by 2024 and could be delayed until 2025. 
        Sources in the semiconductor equipment supply chain have revealed that the overall construction and equipment installation schedule for TSMC's new fab in Arizona, US, has been delayed, while the foundry must also address severe manpower shortages, soaring costs, and emerging education and adaptation issues involving foreign workers. 
        On the other hand, TSMC has also started to adjust its order intake in the US. The sources stressed that it will be a major challenge for TSMC to accurately calculate costs and margins in negotiating prices with customers for the already sky-high 5/4/3nm chips, especially with the inevitable increase in US wafer production costs.
