April 28, 2023 - ON Semiconductor Corporation (onsemi, NASDAQ: ON), a leader in smart power and smart sensing technologies, announced that it has delivered its billionth inductive sensor interface integrated circuit (IC) to HELLA, an international automotive parts supplier and part of the FORVIA group of companies. The ICs, designed by ON Semiconductor, are used in HELLA's non-contact inductive position sensor (CIPOS®) technology for automotive in-line control systems. Over a 25-year partnership, the innovative design developed by the two companies has reduced the size of Hella modules and ON Semiconductor ICs to better suit applications with high module form factor requirements.

CIPOS® is a sensing technology used in in-line driving systems for passenger cars and commercial vehicles, such as accelerator pedal sensing, steering and torque sensors, and supercharger and turbo actuators. ICs designed by ON Semiconductor are the core element of the Hella solution and together with the connected coil structure form the inductive position sensor. This non-contact solution provides ON Semiconductor ICs with guaranteed accuracy over the lifetime of the CIPOS?system.CIPOS® technology is also completely immune to stray magnetic fields, a key advantage for the electronically functional o riented automotive industry. This industry-leading technology is widely used by major automotive OEMs and HELLA is the global market leader in the field of accelerometer pedal sensors.
Marco Dōbrich, Head of HELLA's Sensors business area, said: "We have benefited from ON Semiconductor's technology and development expertise for many years and have thus been able to build CIPOS® into a market-leading sensing solution. The quality of ON Semiconductor's ICs is outstanding and our forward capacity planning with ON Semiconductor has allowed us to plan ahead and remain agile in tough market conditions."
The partnership between the two companies dates back more than 20 years to the successful launch of the first automotive inductive position sensor in 1999. Since then, ON Semiconductor has supplied Hella with three generations of inductive position interfaces. Each generation has been developed exclusively for Hella in a joint effort between the two companies.
Sudhir Gopalswamy, Senior Vice President and General Manager of ON Semiconductor's Advanced Solutions Division, said: "We would not have reached this significant milestone if our teams did not have such a precise understanding of each other's technologies and processes. But we are not stopping there and are already working on the fourth generation of inductive position sensor technology. This generation will include system-level improvements, particularly in the area of Automotive Safety Integrity Level (ASIL-x), as the automotive industry moves towards fully automated driving.
