ON Semiconductor Expands Bluetooth Low-Power Microcontroller (MCU) Family to Automotive Wireless Applications

        ON Semiconductor, a leader in smart power and smart sensing technologies, introduces ultra-low power automotive-grade wireless microcontrollers with Bluetooth low-power connectivity. As the number of sensors and in-vehicle communications increase, automotive manufacturers are increasingly inclined to use wireless connectivity technologies to reduce wiring costs and weight, for which the NCV-RSL15 is ideal. On the other hand, the rising number of sensor deployments may lead to a concomitant increase in the number of cyber attacks, exacerbating security concerns. Such security concerns can be addressed with this new microcontroller.
 
 
        While the list of sensors and general functions in tyre pressure monitoring systems (TMS) and other sensing applications continues to grow, the power budget has not. At the same time, some applications now require a battery life of up to 10 years.The NCV-RSL15 is certified by the EEMBC as the industry's lowest power safety wireless microcontroller with a proprietary intelligent sensing power mode to minimise power usage. The ability to save more battery power equates to increased product life.
        The NCV-RSL15 excels in applications such as vehicle access and tyre pressure monitoring systems, and its small size makes it perfectly suited for use in portable remote access devices and other space-constrained tyres and vehicles," said Michel De Mey, vice president of ON Semiconductor's Industrial Solutions Division.         As the number of access points increases, potential attack vectors must be secured to prevent wireless access to unauthorized user-side to the vehicle's central computer or central processing unit.The NCV-RSL15 features Arm® CryptoCell™, providing the latest embedded security technology with hardware-based root-of-trust secure boot, multi-user accessible hardware-accelerated encryption algorithms and over-the-air downloadable firmware over-the-air (FOTA) functionality to support future firmware updates and security patch deployments.
