ON Semiconductor's EliteSiC silicon carbide (SiC) module improves energy efficiency and reduces weight of the Korean automaker's main drive inverter, extending electric vehicle (EV) range and improving performance

Jan. 5, 2023 - ON Semiconductor Corporation (onsemi, NASDAQ: ON), a leader in smart power and smart sensing technologies, announced that ON Semiconductor's EliteSiC family of silicon carbide (SiC) power modules has been selected by Kia Corporation for its EV6 GT model. This electric vehicle (EV) accelerates from zero speed to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds and has a top speed of 161 mph. In the main drive inverter of this high-performance EV, the EliteSiC power module enables efficient power conversion from the battery's DC 800V to the rear axle AC drive. ON Semiconductor will continue to work with Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Corporation (HMC/KIA) to use EliteSiC technology for its upcoming high-performance electric vehicles based on the Electrified Global Modular Platform (E-GMP).
ON Semiconductor's high power density SiC power modules use the most innovative packaging technology to minimize parasitic effects and thermal resistance and provide robust package reliability using innovative interconnect technology to reduce power losses associated with DC-AC conversion while reducing the size and weight of the main drive inverter, improving performance and increasing the range of electric vehicles by up to 5 percent.
With decades of experience in superior packaging technology for high-density power solutions for automotive applications, ON Semiconductor's differentiated power module technology enables industry-leading power master drive solutions. The superior packaging technology and evolutionary path from SiC's planar to trench cell structure enable ON Semiconductor to provide highly stable and reliable solutions for industry leader Hyundai Kia Motors Group.
Our partnership with Hyundai Kia Motors Group is rooted in the superior performance of ON Semiconductor's EliteSiC technology," said Simon Keeton, executive vice president and general manager of ON Semiconductor's Power Solutions Division. Equally important, ON Semiconductor's rapidly growing vertically integrated SiC supply chain allows us to plan for the necessary scale to support high volume production of electric vehicles."
