According to foreign science and technology media reports, Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will be built using TSMC N3E process, TSMC's second-generation 3-nanometer technology. Currently, TSMC's initial 3nm process production capacity has been completely swallowed up by Apple.

In November last year, at the 2022 Snapdragon Summit, Qualcomm released a new generation of Snapdragon 8 platform and launched the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, which brought a huge upgrade to the mobile side. However, after Apple launched the M series chips, Qualcomm could not sit still and began to increase investment in the PC field. At the conference this time, Qualcomm announced the name of the new generation of custom ARM cores "Oryon".
In January 2021, Qualcomm acquired chip startup Nuvia, whose founder was Apple's chief architect. This person had been involved in the A7 to A14 chip design, and Nuvia was developing a customizable core and server chip at the time, which is also necessary for Qualcomm to get involved in the PC field. Because of this acquisition, Qualcomm did not hesitate to tear up its face with ARM in court. ARM noted that Qualcomm attempted to transfer ARM's patent license to Nuvia without ARM's consent. While Nuvia's license was terminated in March 2022, ARM made several sincere efforts to communicate to find a solution, but the results were disappointing and the matter could not be properly resolved.
Qualcomm wants to quickly deploy the PC field, so it is very necessary to use the self-developed ARM core to improve PC performance. Qualcomm has tried many times to lay out the PC market and launched the Snapdragon 8cx series chips, which are used in Windows ARM versions and Chrome notebooks, but have not achieved good results. This time, Qualcomm intends to abandon the ARM CPU design in Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 and use the Oryon core solution originally customized for PC chips. Multi-core performance will increase by 40%.
It is reported that Qualcomm intends to put down 2 Nuvia Phoenix performance cores and 6 Nuvia Phoenix M energy efficiency cores in the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4. In specific tests, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 core solo ran out of 2070 points, and the multi-core reached 9100 points. Compared to the multi-core score of 8800-9000 points of the Apple M2 chip, this Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 can be described as a corner overtaking. Considering that the current Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 core solo score is almost 1400-1500 points, and the multi-core score is about 5500 points, the improvement of Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is still quite amazing. After being led by Apple's A-series chips for many years, the current Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 has surpassed the GPU. Later, with the continuous iteration of Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, future performance will no longer be an important parameter to distinguish Apple from Android phones, and Android phones may embark on a performance-leading path.
