Qualcomm announced the launch of the Snapdragon X (pronounced "ex" instead of 10) series of chips. 2024 It will be a turning point for the PC industry, with Snapdragon X computing platform bringing higher levels of performance, AI, connectivity and battery life.
The Snapdragon X-series platform is built on Qualcomm's years of experience in heterogeneous CPU, GPU, and NPU computing architectures for notebook computers, and is designed to compete with Apple's custom chip, Apple Silicon. Currently, the Snapdragon X-series with the next-generation custom Qualcomm Oryon CPU will achieve significant performance and energy efficiency improvements, and its NPU will provide an accelerated end-point user experience for the new era of generative AI.
After extensive analysis, consumer research, design ideas, and feedback from the PC ecosystem, we finally decided to adopt a new naming system and a new Visual Identity for this series. "We believe 'X' can fully differentiate the PC platform from other Snapdragon product categories. The high-end Visual Identity can vividly illustrate the computing power of the new platform and the significant improvement in the user experience it empowers. A clear and concise hierarchical structure will make it easy for users to distinguish the performance of different platforms from mainstream to flagship. Both the new naming system and Visual Identity take full advantage of Snapdragon's current global brand value.
Qualcomm pointed out that the Oryon CPU itself will bring "a huge leap in performance and energy efficiency." It added that the combination of CPU and NPU will lead to a better device experience, which shows the growing trend of generative AI. It is worth mentioning that this series of products will coexist with the existing Snapdragon computing platform layer, not replace it. Simply put, if Snapdragon 8cx is targeting Intel Core i5 (which Qualcomm itself claims), then the Snapdragon X series is designed to compete with Core i9.
Before that, although Qualcomm adjusted Arm's core design, such as Cortex-X2 and other IP, and evolved into Kryo, it was still essentially Cortex core. Now Qualcomm has an architecture license after acquiring Nuvia, and the company can develop a chip from scratch, and all it needs to do is follow the same Architecture Instruction Set to design, allowing Qualcomm to develop SoCs like Apple.
The new Snapdragon X series logo and platform logo will present a more vivid visual style in a variety of ways, and will be unveiled at the same time as the first Snapdragon X platform. The new design is bolder, lively, concise and recognizable while showcasing the classic Snapdragon "fireball" elements. Unfortunately, Qualcomm only released the "Snapdragon X" brand today rather than a specific product. Qualcomm is expected to reveal the full look of this product at the Snapdragon Summit in a few weeks.
