Quartz used in the production of computer chips will again increase in price, sources say

        The price of quartz, which is used to make computer chips, is expected to rise again, according to The Elec. Their prices already rose earlier this year, but are expected to increase by another 10 percent. This is due to the increase in raw material prices and unfavorable exchange rates.
 
 
        Korean quartz manufacturers, such as Wonik QnC and Young Shin Quartz, are expected to raise their prices soon. A person with direct knowledge of the matter said that it is very rare to see quartz prices raised twice in one year.
        Quartz is used in the chip manufacturing process to focus rings and other goods in the wafer chamber. Quartz components are typically used to ensure that high purity is maintained while being able to withstand high pressure/vacuum at high temperatures without reacting with the wafer itself or introducing particles that would cause subsequent circuit failures.
        We understand that the purity of this quartz must exceed 99.99% and that the raw materials required are supplied by companies in the US, Japan and Germany. Korean quartz manufacturers, who rely on imports to make quartz, are raising prices as suppliers also say prices will jump.
        Demand for quartz is also expected to continue to increase, as the more advanced the chip process node, the more quartz is used. Advanced chips require more etching and the output of plasma will increase, which will wear out commodities such as quartz more quickly.
        According to Eugene Investment & Securities, the Korean quartz market is expected to be 1.3 trillion won (about $1 billion) this year and grow to 1.6 trillion won (about $1.225 billion) next year.
