ROHM Announced Acquisition of Former Solar Frontier Kunitomi Plant to Expand SiC Production Capacity

        According to ROHM's official website, on July 12, ROHM announced that it had reached a basic agreement with Solar Frontier to acquire the assets of Solar Frontier's former Kunitomi Factory in Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan. The acquisition is scheduled to take place in October 2023, after which the Kokutomi Factory will become one of ROHM's main production bases.
 
 
        It is clear that semiconductors are playing a growing role in the realization of a carbon-free society. Especially in the automotive and industrial equipment markets, where technological innovations around electrification are changing rapidly in order to reduce the environmental load and achieve the goal of carbon neutrality, the market demand for power semiconductors and analog semiconductors is also increasing. In order to meet market demand, ROHM plans to continue expanding production capacity centered on SiC power semiconductors to ensure a stable supply to customers.
        It was disclosed that the acquired assets, which cover a total area of 400,000 square meters, including factories and office areas, will be used primarily for SiC capacity expansion. It is expected to begin operations by the end of next year as ROHM's fourth silicon carbide wafer fabrication facility.
