International Semiconductor Industry Association (SEMI) made an announcement on the 26st, due to the Russian-Ukrainian conflict continues to threaten the supply of key special gases and other raw materials for semiconductors, the world is afraid that by 2024 will continue to face the problem of global chip shortage.
According to the Nikkei Asian Review, SEMI President and CEO Ajit Manocha said on the 26st, due to the Russian-Ukrainian conflict led to a shortage of inert gases and other key materials, the next two years chip supply is expected to continue to be tight.
Ajit Manocha said that chip makers are currently trying to find alternatives to raw materials purchased from Ukraine, but can replace the Ukrainian chip raw material supply sources are really difficult to find, mainly high-purity rare gases, such as neon, helium and krypton. The conflict will continue to hamper supply, even as demand surges.
Ajit Manocha said that although 92 new chip factories will be put into operation globally in the next few years to meet surging semiconductor demand, the situation will not improve until all factories are up and running. He said that many semiconductor manufacturers are expanding their production capacity, which has the opportunity to make the supply and demand more balanced in the next two years. But the industry's biggest concern right now is the lack of the necessary equipment to make chips.
