Russia's 7 billion rubles support the expansion of Mikron, China's largest semiconductor maker, which can mass-produce 90nm chips

        In the wake of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, Russia is facing a chip shortage crisis due to the sanctions it has received from the West. Earlier this year, Mikron, Russia's largest semiconductor manufacturer, prepared an investment project to triple its production capacity (up to 6,000 wafers per month) for the production of 180-90nm chips. But in order to implement this project, the company needs around 10 billion roubles.
        Recently, the Russian government announced that it will support Mikron, Russia's largest semiconductor company, with an amount of 7 billion roubles to increase its chip production capacity, but these funds are a 10-year loan secured by Mikron's production equipment.
It is understood that Mikron is currently able to produce semiconductors in processes ranging from 0.18 microns to 90 nanometres, which are not advanced enough to produce traffic cards, IoT and even some general purpose processor chips.

        Mikron is reportedly the only Russian supplier of semiconductors capable of producing chips beyond 180nm, and is currently the largest chip company in Russia, both for foundry and design. The rest of the companies, such as Angstrem, manufacture products for the Military Industrial Complex (MIC) using mainly 600nm technology.
        In April this year, the Russian government announced its new semiconductor programme, which foresees an investment of 3.19 trillion roubles (approximately US$38.43 billion) by 2030. The funds will be used for the development of indigenous semiconductor production technologies, domestic chip development, data centre infrastructure, the development of indigenous talent and the marketing of home-made chips and solutions. In particular, for semiconductor manufacturing, Russia plans to invest 420 billion rubles (approximately US$5 billion) in the development of new manufacturing processes and subsequent improvements. One of the short-term goals is to increase local chip production using 90nm manufacturing processes by the end of 2022, and one of the longer-term goals is to achieve 28nm chip manufacturing by 2030.
