December 11, Samsung Electronics Foundry Foundry Division Senior Researcher Byung-Jae Park spoke at the "2022 Semiconductor EUV Global Ecosystem Conference" on Thursday.
He said that by 2026, the global 3nm process node foundry market will reach $24.2 billion, up more than 20 times from $1.2 billion this year.

At present, Samsung Electronics is the only company that announced the successful mass production of 3nm chips. As Samsung Electronics, TSMC, Intel and other semiconductor majors start to introduce EUV equipment and process technology continues to develop, 3nm process is expected to become a key competitive node.
According to Gartner data, by the end of this year, the largest share of the foundry market is 5 nanometer and 7 nanometer process, the market size of $ 36.9 billion, and its share will be gradually replaced by 3 nanometer in the future. He said, "With the introduction of the 14nm FinFET process, Samsung Electronics has risen to the second position in the foundry market."
The 3nm node is said to require new device structures to improve performance, and Samsung, which was the first to achieve volume production of the 3nm process, uses MBCFET technology with a ring-gate (GAA) transistor structure, which offers significant improvements in performance and power consumption over FinFETs.
"In the case of FinFETs, performance increases with the number of pins, but the increase in power consumption outweighs the increase in performance," he said, adding that "MBCFETs, on the other hand, are much more efficient because they improve performance and power at similar levels. "
Specifically, in FinFET technology, performance increases by a factor of 1.3 but power consumption rises by a factor of 2.2, while in MBCFETs, performance increases by a factor of 1.7 while power consumption only increases by a factor of 1.6, making them relatively more efficient.
