Samsung Electronics plans to increase chip production capacity at its largest semiconductor plant next year, despite a global economic slowdown next year, South Korea's Seoul Economic Daily said. Samsung is said to increase its wafer capacity for memory and system semiconductors by about 10 percent in 2023.

Industry sources said Samsung Electronics will add DRAM equipment at its P3 plant in Pyeongtaek, South Korea, with a monthly capacity of 70,000 wafers for 12-inch wafers, and will increase its P3 foundry wafer capacity by 30,000 wafers (100,000 in total) next year, up from the current 20,000 wafers per month capacity of the P3 plant's DRAM line.
Samsung Electronics plans to use the new facility to produce 12nm DRAM, and as of the third quarter of this year, Samsung's total monthly DRAM wafer production was 665,000 wafers.
According to the report, Samsung Electronics plans to increase wafer production at P3 by 30,000 wafers per month. As of the third quarter of this year, Samsung Electronics' overall monthly wafer foundry production was 476,000 wafers. In addition, Samsung Electronics also decided to set up at least 10 new extreme ultraviolet lithography equipment (EUV) next year, while Samsung currently has only 40 units.
Samsung currently has five semiconductor plants in South Korea, located in Jiheung, Hwaseong, Pyeongtaek, Onyang and Cheonan. In addition, Samsung operates three chip plants in Suzhou, Tianjin and Xi'an in China and a chip plant in Austin, Texas, USA. Samsung's largest semiconductor plant is the P3 plant in Pyeongtaek, which began construction in late 2020 and took nearly two years to complete. It began producing state-of-the-art NAND flash memory chips in July this year, and may also produce application processors and other semiconductors in the future.
Samsung's third quarter 2022 results showed operating profit of KRW10.85 trillion, down 31.4% year-on-year and 23% sequentially, and net profit of KRW9.39 trillion, down 23.6% year-on-year. Samsung's rivals have scaled back investment due to falling demand and a glut of chips. However, Samsung said in October this year that they would not intentionally cut chip production, contrary to the industry-wide trend of cutting production to meet medium- to long-term demand.
