Samsung Electronics to invest US$5 billion to promote carbon reduction

Samsung Electronics plans to invest 7 trillion won (US$5 billion) in green initiatives and lobby South Korea to add more clean energy in the hope of reversing the trend of rising emissions and achieving zero direct pollution by mid-century.

Samsung Electronics, the world's largest manufacturer of memory chips, has seen its climate footprint expand in recent years with the expansion of its energy-intensive production lines. The company plans to eliminate carbon emissions from Scope 1 (direct emissions) and Scope 2 (indirect emissions).
While Samsung has not yet set targets to reduce Scope 3 pollution, as some of its peers have done, it intends to set targets in the future.
　　 The largest South Korean company also plans to switch its overseas factories to entirely renewable energy generation within five years, although the company argues that it is currently unable to achieve similar targets for its most energy-intensive domestic factories, which account for the majority of its production, due to South Korea's heavy reliance on fos sil fuels and the limited availability of clean energy.
