October 29 news, according to Korean media etnews reported today, Samsung and LG has been confirmed to be developing XR devices based on Qualcomm chips. Qualcomm Technologies vice president and general manager of the XR sector, Division Hongguo (Hugo Swart) said recently at an event in the United States on the island of Maui, "about cooperation can not disclose the details at present, but we do work with Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics."
Si Hongguo said that LG has expertise in a number of areas, while Samsung has made a lot of progress since the announcement of cooperation with Qualcomm and Google. Samsung, Qualcomm and Google had announced the XR alliance in February this year, and LG President Cho Joo-won also said of XR at a press conference on its medium- and long-term business strategy in July this year that he was in contact with several companies and studying the possibility of commercialization at the time.
Samsung and LG did not specify when the product will be launched, with reports saying it is expected as early as the first half of next year. Meanwhile, Si Hongguo said he is currently planning to launch the next-generation XR chip in the first quarter of next year, which will be more advanced than the second-generation chip (XR2) used in the Meta Quest headset, and is expected to outperform the second-generation chip in terms of graphic processing power, video perspective, and AI performance.
Samsung and LG are expected to build XR terminals based on the third-generation chip to take on the likes of Meta's Quest and Apple's Vision Pro. LG also said it is currently developing smart glasses. Si Hongguo is optimistic about the prospects for XR devices, "We believe that 2024 will be the peak growth year for VR and AR devices, and the next 2-5 years will be a period of continuous growth."
