On November 2, MinebeaMitsumi announced that it will acquire Hitachi Power Semiconductor Device (HPSD), a power semiconductor business company under Hitachi, to strengthen its power semiconductor business.

HPSD is a 100% owned subsidiary of Hitachi, and MinebeaMitsumi aims to acquire all of the shares of HPSD, although MinebeaMitsumi has not disclosed the specific timetable and size of the acquisition. As of the date of publication, MinebeaMitsumi has signed a share purchase agreement with Hitachi.
According to the Japanese media, MinebeaMitsumi aims to acquire all the shares of HPSD in 2023 (by the end of March 2024), and the acquisition amount is estimated to be around 40 billion yen. MinebeaMitsumi's analog chip business, including power semiconductors, is positioned as one of the company's core businesses, and it aims to increase the revenue scale of the analog chip business from the current 80 billion yen to 2030, and to increase the revenue scale of the analog chip business from the current 80 billion yen to 2030. MinebeaMitsumi aims to increase its analog chip business to 300 billion yen in fiscal 2030, up from the current 80 billion yen.
Demand for power semiconductors is growing not only in relation to electric vehicles, but also in a variety of fields such as renewable energy sources such as GX (green transition), wind and solar power, large-scale transportation equipment such as electric power and power grids and railroads, and medical and healthcare applications such as heavy-ion radiation therapy and MRI, as well as industrial and mechanical equipment, including data centers.
In addition to the mass market, MinebeaMitsumi said it expects to realize significant synergies by leveraging its unique strengths in niche markets, and to achieve growth of more than 300 billion yen through its analog semiconductor business.
From Japan, MinebeaMitsumi's competitors in the same industry include Renesas Electronics, Toshiba Semiconductor's subsidiary Toshiba Electronic Devices & Storage, and other companies. Toshiba Electronic Devices & Storage", a subsidiary of Toshiba Semiconductor.
According to Nikkei News reported in July, MinebeaMitsumi President Yukihisa Beinuma in Sapporo City, said in an exclusive interview, plans to double the analog chip factory located in Chitose City, Hokkaido, "Chitose plant" production capacity, the size of the investment amount of up to 100 billion yen. To 6-inch wafer conversion, the current MinebeaMitsumi Hokkaido analog chip monthly production capacity of about 40,000 pieces. It also said that the Chitose plant will increase production of IGBT products in addition to the future production of power semiconductor products using silicon carbide (SiC), the investment will be close to the scale of 100 billion yen.
Renesas Electronics President and CEO Shibata Yingli has said, will start investing in SiC power semiconductors from this year, the goal is to start mass production in 2025, will use its current production of silicon power semiconductors Takasaki plant 6-inch wafer line production, the main reason for with the popularization of electric vehicles (EV), drive energy-saving performance of SiC power semiconductors is expected to be a significant increase in demand in the future. In addition to SiC, Renesas will also actively invest in power semiconductors such as silicon IGBTs, which are currently used in EVs. The Kofu plant, which was closed in 2014, is expected to be reopened in the first half of 2024 to produce silicon power semiconductors.
