According to the latest data from market research firm Omdia, in the second quarter of this year, Samsung Electronics won the top spot in the global semiconductor market in terms of revenue, while beating Intel for the fourth consecutive quarter.
According to Omdia, the global semiconductor market reached US$158.113 billion in the second quarter, down US$3.111 billion from the previous quarter.
Omdia believes that the reason for the increase in revenue is mainly related to server chips maintaining a certain level of demand and the growth of system semiconductors.
It is understood that Samsung Electronics global market share reached 12.8%, an increase of 0.3% over the previous quarter; Intel's global share was 9.4%, 3.4% behind Samsung, and in the previous quarter, the gap between the two companies was 1.4%.
Intel's second quarter revenue, meanwhile, was US$14.865 billion, down 16.6% from the previous quarter.
It is reported that Samsung Electronics overtook Intel for the first time in 2017 and held on to the first place until 2018, but in 2019 and 2020, Samsung lost to Intel again and only regained the title in Q3 2021 lasting until now.
Omdia data shows that the second to fifth ranking in order: SK Hynix (6.8%), Qualcomm (5.9%), Micron (5.2%), Broadcom (4.2%). It should be noted that Omdia's survey did not include TSMC.
Some analysts point out that Samsung may lose its title in the second half of the year as the memory chip market shrinks.
