News on September 20 It is reported that the A16 chip has just been unveiled, and Apple has developed the A17 chip, which will use TSMC’s N3E process for high-end products in the iPhone product line to be released in 2023. TSMC's N3E chip will be mass-produced in the second half of 2023, in line with the release plan for the iPhone 15 series.

The first models equipped with the A17 chip may be the iPhone 15 Pro series. At the same time, the basic iPhone 15 continues to use the A16 with the N4 process.
According to three people familiar with the matter, the A17 chip currently under development by Apple will be mass-produced using TSMC's N3E chip manufacturing technology and is expected to be available in the second half of next year. They said that the A17 will be used for high-end products in the iPhone product line to be released in 2023. It may be that only the iPhone 15 Pro Max and the iPhone 15 Pro are equipped with the A17 chip of the 3nm process, while the normal version is still the A16 chip of the N4.
If nothing else, Qualcomm's next-generation Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip is still manufactured in a 4nm process, and Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip is expected to use a 3nm process.
From the previous plan, N3E will provide a complete support platform for smartphones and HPC-related applications in the 3nm process era. At the same time, as an extension of TSMC's 3nm family, N3E has better performance, power consumption and yield, and the N3E process will enter mass production in the second half of 2023.
According to industry insiders, Apple will become "the main customer of TSMC's 3nm process manufacturing in 2023, and the foundry is expected to complete considerable 3nm chip orders for multiple customers in 2024."
