An article published by Korean media outlet Korea Economy says that Samsung Electronics has started producing flagship smartphones such as the Galaxy 23, Flip 4 and Fold 4 in India.
In an interview, Raju Puran, head of Samsung Electronics' mobile business unit in India, said that all Samsung Electronics' mobile products are manufactured locally, including flip and fold models, which were previously imported to India. However, there was no mention of whether locally made products would be cheaper than imported products.

Samsung is in fierce competition with Chinese-made smartphones in the Indian market. According to market research firm Canalys, the company that sold the most smartphones on the Indian market last year was China's Xiaomi, with a 20 per cent market share. Samsung Electronics came in second with a 19% share. Over the past few years, the Chinese smartphone maker has outsold Samsung thanks to low prices, bigger batteries and a marketing offensive based on cricket and Bollywood.
Pran said, "While Samsung has been slower, it is catching up with its Chinese rivals by selling $1 billion worth of smartphones in India last year by launching cheaper models and partnering with banks to offer credit card discounts." Pran said Samsung received 140,000 orders worth 14 billion rupees (about 1.148 billion yuan) in India within 24 hours after launching its latest model, the Galaxy S23, last week. This is twice the number of orders received on the first day of the previous generation's launch.
Rival Apple began production of its latest product, the iPhone 14, in India last year, while diversifying its reliance on production in China. In addition, it aims to increase the number of iPhones produced in India to 25% of its total production.
Some experts believe that although Samsung has also joined Indian Prime Minister Narendra? Modi's manufacturing revitalisation policy, but unlike rivals such as Apple and Foxconn, Samsung has faced difficulties in obtaining financial incentives.
Samsung Electronics, which first entered India in 1995, is currently launching manufacturing plants in places such as Noida near the capital New Delhi, and operates five research and development centres and one design centre. In addition, "India is an important market that we want to recapture", said Lu Taewoon, president of Samsung Electronics' MX business, in an interview ahead of the unveiling of the Galaxy S23, adding that a centralised mobile research centre had been established in India and that a production base was being set up in the country.
