In the most advanced 3-nanometer process, Samsung and TSMC are always catching up with each other, not giving up, trying to surpass each other to be the first to produce higher transistor density, faster data speed, lower power consumption of the chip. Samsung was the first to announce the mass production of 3nm chips, and then there were media reports that Apple will use TSMC's next-generation 3nm chips in the iPhone and Mac next year.

Now, Samsung has taken another step forward, announcing that it will mass produce 3nm chips for customers such as Nvidia, Qualcomm, IBM and Baidu.
On Tuesday, the media cited people familiar with the matter, Samsung is working with 5-6 fabless supplier customers to jointly develop advanced chips, which will be supplied in large quantities starting as early as 2024.
The person familiar with the matter said that these customers mainly take into account Samsung's advanced 3-nanometer process, as well as the need to secure multiple suppliers, and therefore chose Samsung.
It is reported that Samsung will use 3nm technology to produce graphics processing units (GPUs) for Nvidia, central processing units (CPUs) for IBM, smartphone application processors for Qualcomm and artificial intelligence chips for Baidu for use in cloud data centers.
Some market observers believe that Samsung hopes to use its 3nm technology to outperform rival TSMC in the foundry chip business. Currently in the foundry business, Samsung's market share is far behind TSMC, which holds more than 50% of the global market share.
Samsung said that compared with the earlier 5-nanometer technology, 3-nanometer technology has improved power efficiency and chip performance by 45% and 23%, respectively. Samsung Electronics also claimed that it plans to commercialize a more advanced 2nm process by 2025 and become the foundry market leader by 2030.
