The Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), Taiwan's largest high-tech application research institute in China, recently unveiled its latest high-resolution, full-colour Micro LED display for AR eyewear.
According to ITRI, this innovation will help panel manufacturers and other industry players upgrade their technology, expand their Micro LED applications, meet market demand and secure business opportunities for the next generation of AR display products to enable immersive experiences in the metaverse.
ITRI's high-resolution, full-colour Micro LED displays for AR glasses have four key features:
Ultra-high resolution of over 2000 pixels per inch (PPI) ideal for AR applications.
The Micro LED display can deliver over 20,000 nits of brightness, which is 10 times brighter than many smart glasses on the market today. As a result, the display is suitable for outdoor scenarios and meets the brightness requirements of existing plug-in side-projection AR light machines. ITRI also notes that the display has the potential to exceed the performance of existing corresponding displays, such as OLED-based designs
The integration of display and sensor functions in a compact design of less than 0.5 inches, resulting in a slim product appearance and increased compatibility with other devices.
Power consumption of less than 1 W. With less than half the energy consumed by traditional smart glasses, the device can be worn for long periods of time without recharging.
ITRI says the design uses a heterogeneous integration technique similar to the semiconductor process to create a miniature display with a wide colour gamut by integrating Micro LEDs, CMOS and quantum dot colour conversion layers into a single panel.
Dr. Shih-Chieh Chang, General Manager of ITRI's Electronics and Optoelectronic Systems Research Laboratory, said, "ITRI's high-resolution, full-colour Micro LED display for AR glasses has high commercial value, enhancing the user experience due to its high resolution, high brightness, device compatibility, compact size and low power consumption. This high resolution Micro LED will help the world's leading display manufacturers take advantage of the wide range of emerging Micro LED applications. ITRI's assistance to manufacturers in pilot production and technology transfer has laid the foundation for the development of in-car displays and next-generation XR glasses."
To bring ITRI's Micro LED technology to AR applications and bring it from the lab to the market, ITRI established the Micro LED Alliance in 2016 to horizontally integrate the industry chain. The consortium connects around 50 industry chain suppliers of advanced materials, semiconductor processes and precision equipment, and provides solutions that meet industry needs at different stages of validation, development and IP licensing.
ITRI says its new high-resolution, full-colour Micro LED displays for AR glasses are sold as a system-oriented industry integration and manufacturing platform service and are now available worldwide.
