Shortage of pellicle protection film for chip production leads to price increases

Dec. 7 -- The Elec reports that pellicle protection film for Arf and Krf lithography processes in wafer manufacturing is in short supply. This is due to the rise of more fabless companies in China every day, and the overall demand for such goods is increasing as chipmakers aim to develop new semiconductors.

In the Korean region, only FST produces pellicle protection film, and the company expects to increase exports by 50% this year compared to 2021. We understand that pellicle shields are used to protect photomasks on wafers from contamination during the lithography process. This allows chip makers to use their photomasks for longer periods of time, resulting in cost savings.
FST is a major local supplier of pellicle films to chipmakers based in Korea. Last year, exports accounted for 30 percent of its protective film revenue, but that is expected to increase to 40 percent this year, an FST spokeswoman said, adding that higher raw material prices are also contributing to the price hike, as well as mergers among Japanese protective film makers that have slowed production of the commodity.
Earlier this year, 3M had to close its plant in Belgium to comply with local environmental laws, which may have been the main reason for the increase in raw material prices. Many existing protective film manufacturers are also developing new pellicle protective films for advanced process nodes, reducing their overall production volumes.
