SK Hynix restructured the CMOS image sensor team and focused on developing high-end products

        On January 28, according to TheElec, SK Hynix has restructured its CMOS image sensor (CIS) team to shift its focus from expanding market share to developing high-end chips.
 
 
 
        Its CIS team was a single organization before the change, but the company has now created a sub-team focusing on the specific functions and features of image sensors. In general, the team is now more like a R&D team than a sales and marketing team.
        CIS is widely used in smart phones and IT products because of its camera function.
        It is learned that Sony is the world's largest CIS component manufacturer, followed by Samsung. The two companies focus on high resolution and multi-function, and jointly control 70% to 80% of the market share. Sony is the overwhelming leader, with about 50% market share.
        SK Hynix has a small scale in this field and used to focus on low-end CIS with resolution of 20MP or less.
        However, SK Hynix began to supply its CIS to Samsung in 2021. It provided 13MP CIS for Samsung folding screen phones and 50MP sensor for Galaxy A series last year.
        Nevertheless, the overall demand for CIS has declined in recent years, because the smartphones that mainly use CIS are suffering from the slowdown in demand.
        This is particularly distressing for mid-range mobile phones, because their unit prices have fallen due to the sluggish consumer demand.
The source said that in view of this, SK Hynix has been reducing its CIS production and also reducing its inventory.
