South Korea's Chip Exports Turned Negative in January, SK Hynix Lost Money for the First Time in 10 Years

        South Korea reported its largest-ever trade deficit in January as chip sales and chip prices plummeted. According to the data, Korea's semiconductor exports fell 44.5% year-on-year to $6 billion, petrochemical exports dropped 25% to $3.8 billion and display exports dropped 36% to $1.3 billion.
 
 
        Chip exports were affected by plunging prices for DRAM and NAND flash memory chips as demand weakened and inventories built up. System chip exports, which had been firm, turned negative in January.
        Semiconductor exports fell 44.5 percent last month compared with a year ago due to the global economic slowdown and falling semiconductor prices. South Korean memory chip maker SK Hynix announced its Q4 2022 (ending Dec. 31, 2022) results on Feb. 1: revenue decreased 38% (30% QoQ) to 7.699 trillion won, while revenue loss was 1.701 trillion won, underperforming 4Q 2021 (4.22 trillion won) and 3Q 2022 (1.656 trillion won). The net loss amounted to 3.524 trillion won.
        In the first half of last year, SK Hynix started mass production of HBM3 DRAM (the fourth generation of high-frequency wide storage products) for customers such as AI chip maker NVIDIA Corporation. NVIDIA announced a multi-year partnership with Microsoft Corp. last November to build one of the world's most powerful AI supercomputers. Microsoft has announced that customers will soon be able to use ChatGPT through Azure OpenAI services.
       Bloomberg reports that SK Hynix rival Samsung Electronics Co. said Tuesday that its capital expenditure plan for this year is expected to be comparable to that of last year, mainly in response to necessary infrastructure investments required for medium- to long-term demand.
