Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. (NYSE: VSH) announced the launch of a new line of automotive vPolyTan surface mount polymer tantalum molded chip capacitors, the T51 series. The AEC-Q200 certified Vishay Polytech T51 series capacitors improve performance under high temperature and humidity conditions, reduce equivalent series resistance (ESR) and voltage derating, and provide a benign failure mode with higher volume efficiency than conventional tantalum capacitors. In addition, these technical advantages make the technology superior to multilayer ceramic chip capacitors (MLCCS) and aluminum capacitors in comparable capacity ranges.

The recently released devices are available in D (EIA 7343-31) and V (EIA 7343-20) small package versions with capacities from 6.8 µF to 330 µF at 2.5 V to 35 V ratings with a 20 % capacity tolerance. The capacitors feature a highly conductive polymer cathode system with ultra-low ESR from 120 mW down to 40 mW at +25 °C.
The T51 series devices are ruggedly designed for use in a variety of harsh environments, with operating temperatures up to +125 °C, reduced operating voltage required for temperatures above +105 °C, and a high temperature service life of 2000 hours. With ripple currents up to 2.37 A, the capacitors are ideal for decoupling, smoothing and filtering capacitors for switching and point-of-load (POL) power supplies for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), infotainment systems and other in-vehicle electronics.
The T51 series capacitors are lead (Pb)-free terminated, RoHS and Vishay Green compliant, and halogen-free. The new automotive grade tantalum capacitors are now available in samples and in volume production with a 20-week lead time.
