In 2022, TSMC and Samsung entered the 3nm era. Although TSMC's 3nm has won orders from customers such as Apple, it is rumored that the foundry price is as high as $20,000, which is more than 25% higher than that of 5nm. Such high prices also scare off some customers. Samsung's 3nm chip also took the opportunity to get orders.
According to Samsung's information, the current mass production is the 3nm GAE process, which can reduce power consumption by 45%, reduce area by 16%, and improve performance by 23% at the same time. The second generation 3nm GAP process can reduce power consumption by 50%, improve performance by 30%, and reduce area by 35% at the same time, with better results. It is expected to be mass-produced in 2024.

Previously, in addition to Samsung's own use, the 3nm process has also locked in four major customers, including IBM, NVIDIA, Qualcomm and domestic Baidu. These companies have taken a comprehensive look at the past strategic partnership and the need for multiple supply chains. Factors, choose Samsung as a chip foundry company. Among them, Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen3 will have a high probability of returning to Samsung's embrace. There are two main reasons. First, TSMC's 3nm has also suffered delays, and even the progress is not as good as Samsung's.
The 3nm chips of these customers are expected to be mass-produced from 2023 to 2024. Some may be the first generation 3nm, and some will be the second generation 3nm process. Samsung also revealed at its earnings conference a few days ago that the output of the first generation 3nm process is currently stable, and the second generation 3nm process is progressing smoothly. It will be mass-produced as scheduled in 2024. There are a lot of mobile and HPC customers interested.
