SK Hynix's DRAM market share has reached 35 percent in the third quarter of this year, according to a new analysis by market research firm Omdia.
Jung Sung-kong, Senior Analyst at Omdia, said that the proportion of AI servers is increasing due to the impact of generative AI, and the demand for AI is expected to continue to grow in the medium to long term. the growing role of DRAM in AI learning has also led to an increase in corresponding demand. He emphasized the significant growth in HBM shipments, which is now a key focus for AI memory.
He predicted that from this year to 2027, DRAM market revenues will grow at an annualized rate of 21%, while the HBM market is expected to grow at a rate of 52%. HBM's share of DRAM market revenues is expected to exceed 10% this year and approach 20% by 2027.
He also mentioned that "major IT companies around the world are lining up for HBM," and that "while HBM manufacturers plan to more than double capacity next year, the 52-week-long order backlog doesn't seem to be enough to satisfy everyone."
HBM transaction prices are already 5-7 times higher than standard products, and replacement cycles are shorter at 1-2 years.SK Hynix's share of the DRAM market has also increased due to the HBM effect.
SK Hynix's market share reached 35 percent in the third quarter, the highest since the company's inception, according to Omdia's survey results," he said.
He expects that the oversupply of HBM will remain for a long time. In addition, starting next year, DRAM companies may increasingly focus on high-end products like HBM, placing mainstream products at a lower priority. This shift could increase DRAM companies' bargaining power in terms of mainstream product pricing due to supply constraints.
"Not everyone will be able to enter the HBM market; only a few companies with the technical capabilities will dominate in the next up-cycle. This will lead to a shift where technologically advanced companies continue to monopolize and generate profits."
