September 21, 2012 - STMicroelectronics (ST) recently announced that it has partnered with TrinamiX, a new biometric technology vendor, to complete a facial recognition reference design that operates under OLED screens to meet the security levels required for mobile payments and is certified for compliance with IIFAA, AndroidTM and FIDO standards.

David Maucotel, business director of ST's Imaging Products Division, said the partnership with TrinamiX provides ST with additional opportunities for technology, usage examples and ecosystem support to meet the rapidly growing needs of personal electronics and more for the under-screen facial recognition market.
The solution is said to integrate an illumination system, a camera lens module using ST's enhanced near-infrared sensitivity full-field shutter image sensor (VD56G3), and TrinamiX's proprietary algorithms running on the processor. TrinamiX facial recognition technology is approved for integration into the Android operating system in 2021 and passes the high biometric security requirements of Android Biometric Class 3, IIFAA biometric facial security testing requirements and FIDO Class C, the highest standard to be introduced by the FIDO Alliance, are among the certifications.
ST explains that this system provides a contactless, fast and reliable authentication method for smartphones and other products that require user authentication. The advantage of the solution is the use of unique technology, in addition to skin detection to verify whether the user is a real person, but also can effectively distinguish between skin and other materials to identify such as the use of photographs, hyper-realistic masks and deep fake technology and other impersonation techniques.
