ST's HVLED101 flyback controller for LED luminaires up to 180W integrates features, patented control technology and primary detection voltage regulator support to help improve lighting performance and simplify luminaire circuit design.

The HVLED101 is a new addition to ST's HVLED family of high power factor controllers, with an integrated 800V start-up circuit that reduces LED lighting time to less than 250ms. A high-voltage input detection circuit and maximum power control (MPC) engine ensure stable power output during utility voltage fluctuations, allowing designers to choose smaller, lower-cost external passive components to handle harsh utility conditions. The primary detection regulator without isolated feedback further reduces material costs and increases the reliability of the driver circuit.
ST's input current shaping algorithm is a patented innovation that reduces total harmonic distortion (THD) and maximizes power factor correction. In addition, the HVLED101 is the first high power factor flyback converter controller to use ST's newly developed valley locking technology to minimize audible noise, improve voltage regulator performance and reduce THD. In the quasi-resonant operating steady state, the valley locking method locks the number of skipped valleys until a significant change in output power or input voltage occurs. Even under low to medium load loading conditions, current shaping combined with valley locking can still improve power factor and THD distortion. Flyback converters controlled with the HVLED101 have a full-load THD of 5% and a 1/3 load of 10%, meeting the world's major eco-design specifications.
In addition, in pure quasi-resonant operation mode, designers can set the delay time after over-zero detection with an external resistor. By ensuring that the gate conducts at the trough minimum, the HVLED101 minimizes energy loss and electromagnetic emissions (EMI). Overall, the HVLED101 allows the converter to achieve a maximum efficiency of over 90% with no-load power below 100mW.
The controller has all the necessary protection features built-in, including over-current protection, input overvoltage protection, and power-down protection. An intelligent Automatic Reload Timer (ART) allows all protection mechanisms to operate without latching, ensuring excellent reliability and a superior user experience for the lighting.
To help developers accelerate the development cycle and shorten time to market for end products, ST offers two HVLED101 functional demonstration boards. EVLHV101PSR50W is a 90-265VAC, 60V/0.8A primary sense regulated isolated flyback converter, while EVLHV101SSR50W is the same design as EVLHV101PSR50W is the same, the difference is the secondary detection voltage regulator.
