On September 7, STMicroelectronics will collaborate with BorgWarner to supply ST's latest third-generation 750V Silicon Carbide (SiC) power MOSFET chips for BorgWarner's proprietary Viper-based power modules. BorgWarner will use the power module to design the electric drive inverter platform for a number of Volvo's current and future electric vehicle models.
Javier Varela, Volvo's COO and Deputy CEO, said: "This partnership will increase the range and charging speed of Volvo's electric vehicles, and has the opportunity to further enhance the market popularity of Volvo's electric vehicles, while also contributing to our goal of electrifying all of our models by 2030 and improving vertical integration of the industry chain," said Javier Varela. that strengthens control over key automotive devices."
Stefan Demmerle, vice president, president and general manager of BorgWarner's Powertrain Systems Division, said, "BorgWarner is pleased to be working with STMicroelectronics to provide inverters for the next-generation electric vehicle platform of our longtime customer Volvo."
To take full advantage of ST's SiC MOSFET chips, BorgWarner worked closely with ST's technical team to match ST's chips with BorgWarner's Viper power switches to maximize inverter performance, reduce the size of the electric drive architecture, and improve economics. The collaboration between the two companies will enable better manufacturing scale to meet the rapidly growing needs of the electric vehicle market.
ST's partnership with BorgWarner, one of the world's leading suppliers of automotive electrification, will help Volvo deliver outstanding vehicle performance and range to its customers," said Marco Monti, president of ST's Automotive and Discrete Devices Group (ADG). We will continue to expand SiC capacity and increase SiC supply, including vertical integration of the supply chain, to fully support the electrification and energy efficiency transition of our global automotive and industrial customers."
ST's STPOWER SiC power chips are mass-produced in two front-end facilities in Italy and Singapore, with advanced packaging testing in back-end manufacturing facilities in Morocco and China.2022 In October, ST announced the expansion of its wide-bandwidth product capacity with the construction of a new integrated SiC substrate manufacturing facility in Catania, Italy. Catania is both ST's power semiconductor technology center and a SiC development and manufacturing site.
