STMicroelectronics announced that the ST87M01 NB-IoT and GNSS module has been certified by Vodafone for NB-IoT. The ST87M01 combines mobile IoT access and geo-location functionality in a miniaturized, low-power, integrated module for a wide range of IoT and smart industrial applications.

Working with Vodafone on our test program ensures that our customers will be able to provide reliable and future-proof data connectivity for their IoT solutions that take full advantage of the module's innovative energy-saving features," said Domenico Arrigo, general manager of ST's Conversion Products Division for Industrial and Power Products. In addition, the module was entirely conceived, designed, developed and manufactured by STMicroelectronics for superior product quality and outstanding security, with supply independence and product life assurance."
Sven Sobe, Senior Specialist, IoT Innovation and Certification at Vodafone, added: "Tests have shown that ST's ST87M01 module works seamlessly with our NB-IoT global infrastructure, providing an excellent option for connecting to networks anywhere in Europe."
The ST87M01 was also recently certified by the Global Certification Forum (GCF), which promotes interoperability of mobile and IoT products. The module is compliant with 3GPP Release 15 specifications and offers greater multi-area LTE coverage.
The ST87M01 module combines reliable geo-location capabilities with long-term stable mobile network connectivity to meet the needs of emerging large-scale IoT applications, such as smart traffic emergency lights, which will become mandatory in Spain in 2026. Replacing passive emergency triangles in cars, the new lights are capable of sending real-time car geo-location to local traffic management systems in the event of an accident, in line with the European Road Safety Charter. The ST87M01 is a market-advanced, ultra-highly integrated module that embeds all of the functionality needed to support this application and paves the way for safer, Internet-connected cars.
The NB-IoT certification of the ST87M01 comes at the right time for use in applications such as new smart metering systems for electricity, water and gas being rolled out globally. Particularly in India, the module will provide a very effective solution for the deployment of new smart metering infrastructure, which is expected to reach 250 million units in the next five years.
The module integrates an advanced embedded SIM card, ST4SIM embedded SIM (eSIM), and is certified to the latest industry standards such as GSMA eSA (Security Assurance) certification. There is also a certified Embedded Security Unit (eSE) inside the ST4SIM. The entire circuitry is housed in a 10.6mm x 12.8mm LGA miniature package.
Low-power performance maximizes battery-powered endurance, and the on-chip integrated native GNSS satellite receiver operates in the NB-IoT sleep state to optimize power-saving performance.
Developers can easily integrate the ST87M01 with other STMicroelectronics products, such as MEMS smart actuators and sensors, interfaces and other connectivity chips, to develop more IoT applications that require geolocation accuracy, including pet and personal item tracking devices, industrial asset tracking, and applications across smart infrastructure, smart agriculture and more.
