STMicroelectronics (ST; NYSE:STM) announced that two USB Powered (USB PD) Extended Power Range (EPR) chips have been certified by the USB-IF (USB Developers Forum). The two chips are used on the adapter side (powered) and the device side (powered) of the power supply/charger, extending the output power range of the universal charger to 140 W. Now, just one AC-DC adapter can charge most power-using devices, such as computers, smart home actuators, power tools, and electric bicycles, as well as traditional charging products, such as cell phones, tablets, and smart watches.

ST is a pioneer in the semiconductor industry and is now able to offer USB-IF certified reference designs and chips to meet our customers' needs for high power, industry standard universal chargers/adapters," said Matteo Lo Presti, executive vice president of ST's Analog, MEMS and Sensor Products Division, Analog Products Group at STMicroelectronics. By responding quickly, supporting USB-powered EPR, and obtaining product certification, we are accelerating the advancement of USB-C® connectors to replace custom power plugs and DC adapters in many applications, using universal AC or DC adapters for charging, reducing costs and environmental impact."
Certified by USB-IF for output power up to 140W (28V@5A), the REF_STUSB140W (powered chip) and ST-ONEHP (powered chip) are the two halves of the overall USB PD reference design. The powered reference design ensures designers get a power-efficient and cost-effective prototype solution for seamless USB PD integration. the ST-ONEHP chip comes pre-installed with certified USB PD 3.1 EPR firmware.
In summary, the new USB solution helps advance the wider use of USB-C connectors for charging with universal AC-DC adapters, which will reduce the number of adapters and e-waste carried by end users, while also reducing shipping costs and CO2 emissions.
The USB PD 3.1 specification represents a major technological breakthrough that can accommodate more than 100W of device charging," said Jeff Ravencraft, president and chief operating officer of USB-IF. As one of the first USB-IF certified USB PD EPR reference designs, ST's latest ICs will accelerate the transition of power supplies from proprietary power connectors to USB Type-C®."
As an active participant in the USB PD 3.1 specification and the definition of Extended Power Range (EPR), ST is one of the first semiconductor manufacturers to receive the certification.
