Samsung has been lagging behind Qualcomm and Apple in the mobile GPU space, and to improve its competitiveness, it has been scouting for big names in the industry to form its own GPU team, and has been working heavily with AMD to introduce multiple generations of high-performance, ultra-low-power AMD Radeon graphics solutions.
According to 36 Krypton, Yang Jiao, the former No.1 AI chip guy at Ideal Auto, has joined Samsung as a core member of its GPU team, responsible for project planning and team creation. At RISO, Yang reported to Yan Xie, head of RISO's systems R&D department. Before joining Ideal Auto, Yang was the head of the chip technology department at Ali's Dharma Institute, where he focused on artificial intelligence chips and was responsible for the launch of the "Hanguang 800" chip. Earlier in his career, Yang was also involved in founding the US and Shanghai teams at Huawei, advancing GPU development.
The report also says that Samsung has also recently approached Jiao Guofang, the co-founder of the company, who left Pirentech to build the Qualcomm Snapdragon team that developed the 5th generation Adreno GPU architecture, as well as Huawei's image processor for Honmeng OS.
Samsung's partnership with AMD began in 2019 when Samsung was awarded a license for AMD's RDNA graphics architecture. After three years of work, Samsung launched Xclipse, a mobile GPU based on AMD's RDNA 2 architecture, a mobile GPU with hardware-accelerated ray tracing and variable-rate shading for console-like graphics on mobile devices. Samsung put Xclipse on the Exynos 2200 chip and used it in the Galaxy S22 series.
However, due to the 4nm process and Xclipse's lack of optimization, the Exynos 2200 performed poorly in terms of heat, power consumption, and battery life, leading to user complaints and lawsuits in markets such as South Korea and Europe for the Galaxy S22 series. In an attempt to redeem itself, Samsung suspended the Exynos 2200 in favor of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor.
To avoid a repeat, Samsung renewed its licensing agreement with AMD and expanded the scope of the partnership. The two companies will jointly develop multiple generations of high-performance, ultra-low-power mobile GPUs for use in next-generation chips such as the Exynos 2400 and Exynos 2500. These chips will be available for the Galaxy series of smartphones and are expected to be in volume production using the second generation 3nm GAA process in the second half of 2024.
Industry insiders believe that Samsung is accelerating its own GPU development to reduce its dependence on Qualcomm and ARM and to provide competitive differentiation. If Samsung's partnership with AMD is successful, it will change the landscape of mobile GPUs and bring a better gaming experience to smartphone users.
