Tektronix Helps VisIC Technologies Drive Advances in Electric Vehicle Powertrain Technology

        VisIC Technologies' high-power switching technology, developed using gallium nitride (GaN) semiconductor materials, is expected to play a major role in increasing the global penetration of electric vehicles over the next decade, as it significantly reduces the operating costs and extends the range of electric vehicles. To provide more reliable and efficient power conversion to today's automotive market, VisIC uses Tektronix oscilloscopes to provide accurate and precise measurements that drive advances in electric vehicle powertrain technology.
 
        VisIC Technologies, based in Israel, has been designing its own Direct Drive D-Mode Gallium Nitride (D3GaN) technology, which enables the development of smaller, lower cost, more efficient switching systems that achieve 400V, 200A switching in 8ns. 
        VisIC Technologies chose Tektronix oscilloscopes because of its need to test the switching efficiency of GaN transistors at high voltage (400V) and high frequency oscillation conditions. It was critical for the company to ensure that the measurement data obtained was "real" and not influenced or limited by the measurement system it used. In addition, the equipment used must be able to guarantee the accuracy of the measurement without introducing too much noise into the measurement process. 
        The TIVP IsoVu™ measurement system from Tektronix impressed VisIC Technologies because it provides an electrically isolated (opto-isolated) system that can resolve high bandwidth, high voltage differential signals in the presence of large common mode voltages. The IsoVu is designed to rapidly convert reference voltages while keeping dangerous voltages away from the oscilloscope. 
        The TIVP is designed for use with Tektronix 4/5/6 series MSO oscilloscopes running software version 1.28 or higher. VisIC also selected Keithley 2410, 2400 and 2450 source measurement units (SMUs) and DAQ6510 data acquisition and recording multimeters to form a complete test solution. 
        Roman Volkov, Director of Test and Characterization at VisIC Technologies, is excited about developing unique and advanced solutions and processes that mean the company remains at the forefront of technology. 
        We evaluated various devices for performing characterization measurements and finally chose Tektronix and Keithley systems in our power lab and R&D because they could most accurately test the signals we process in dynamic measurement applications," he said. I especially like the Tektronix oscilloscopes and Keithley SMUs because these systems are so easy and fast to operate. They give us the flexibility we want to perform all relevant measurements and get accurate and stable results every time." 
        Roman continued, "We are leading in this exceptionally important market and we need to have as many measurement options as possible to be able to achieve accurate measurements with very high resolution. Measurement is not a simple task when dealing with GaN technology. For example, we needed optical isolation probes with a minimum bandwidth of 800MHz ~ 1GHz, and we found that the best equipment on the market for these applications came from Tektronix. They provide us with the solutions we need now and in the future."
