The cost of 2nm chips is huge, and there is no $5 billion: CPU and graphics cards have to go up.

        Chip processing is becoming more and more advanced. This year, Samsung mass-produced the 3nm process, and TSMC's 3nm is also on the line. Next year will be the high-light era of 3nm, and 2024 to 2025 will be the mass production of the 2nm process.
 
 
        The emergence of the 2nm chip is of great significance to the entire semiconductor industry. Although 2nm process chips cannot be mass-produced in the short term, the continuity of Moore's Law is demonstrated by showing the process of 2nm process chips etching real chips on standard 300mm silicon wafers.
        At the same time, the chip produced by the advanced process has more powerful performance and better energy efficiency, but this is not without cost. The biggest problem is burning money. Not only will the construction of 3nm and 2nm plants require more than $20 billion, even from AMD. NVIDIA, Apple, Qualcomm and other chip design companies, the cost of developing a chip will become higher and higher.
        At the IEDM meeting not long ago, Marvell released some data, citing the IBS agency, to analyze the chip development cost under various processes, of which the 28nm process only needs 42.8 million US dollars, the 22nm process needs 63 million US dollars, and the 16nm process needs 89.6 million US dollars. The development cost of advanced processes has skyrocketed, 7nm needs 248.6 million US dollars, 5nm needs 448.7 million US dollars, 3nm needs 581.1 million US dollars, and the development capital required for the 2nm process is 724.8 million US dollars, and the RMB is about 5 billion.
        In other words, if a company wants to make an advanced process chip, such as a 2nm processor, not to mention that the design cycle will take several years, the investment alone will need to be 5 billion yuan. Not counting production costs, the 2nm foundry price is not yet available, but the 3nm process will cost more than $20,000, and the price will increase by 25%.
If it develops like this, even if 2nm CPUs and graphics cards can be made in the future, the cost will rise all the way, and there is no way out in this direction.
